Further Information | 1841 British Army Worldwide Index shows Stephen with 69th at Fredericton Canada 1851 British Army Worldwide Index shows Stephen with 69th at Malta 1861 British Army Worldwide Index shows Stephen with 69th at Fermoy Ireland Discharge: At own request having completed 21 years’ service In the 1861 census of England Julia Breen a single woman age 19, born Ireland is living at 4 Magdelen Row, Whitechapel, London, Middlesex, a servant in the household of Henry PAT a cigar merchant In early 1865 Stephen Lillis nominated his sister-in-law Mary BREEN of Ballinaseur Castle, Tralee, Kerry as a Government immigrant. Mary was baptised 5th January 1840 Ardfert Kerry Ireland. On 31 July 1875 Stephen Lillis applied for his 2 daughters aged 10 & 8 be admitted to the RC orphanage as his wife had left him and he was unable to support them. Recommended 6 months approved, he was to pay 9d per day towards their support. Accordingly both Bessie (Eliza) age 10 years and 10 months and Margaret age 9 years and 6 months were admitted to the Roman Catholic orphanage on 31st July 1875 Margaret left on 3rd November 1879 for service in Perth and Bessie left on 22nd July 1881 for a situation at the Vasse. Stephen was first admitted to the Mt. Eliza depot on 13th December 1876 but left when he felt he was able to work, however, on 14 April 1877 he reapplied to be admitted to the poor house as he had found he was not well enough –approved. On 14 October 1885 Edward Lillis applied to the Colonial Secretary for his father’s grant of land to which he felt he was entitled. The Colonial Secretary replied “Edward Lillis is NOT entitled to any land. The lot was awarded to his father by Colonel Harvest but subsequent to his death no substantial improvements had been made and the land was resumed and allotted to another pensioner.” |
