Further Information | 1841 British Army Worldwide Index – Patrick is with the 52nd at Berbice and Demerara (now Guyana – this was British Guiana from 1838 to 1966) 1851 British Army Worldwide Index – Patrick is with the 52nd at Limerick Ireland Discharge: Having been appointed to serve on the Militia Staff and by Authority dated Adjutant General’s Office, Dublin 13 April 1853 Good efficient soldier, trustworthy, sober and seldom in hospital. 1861 Census RG 9 135/137/32 Clifton Road Portland Dorset Patrick Bourke, Head, Married, age 47 Pensioner, born Tipperary Ireland Sarah E Bourke, wife, married , 40, laundress, born Tipperary Ireland John P Bourke, son, single, age 9, scholar, born Limerick, Ireland Francis I Bourke, son, single, 7, scholar, born Maidstone More Road Portland, Dorset: On 28th September 1861 Patrick Bourke wrote to the Secretary of State for the Colonies offering his services as a guard on the next Convict ship sailing to Western Australia. He stated he was a former Corporal in the 52nd regiment with a pension of one shilling and 4 pence per day. He was married with 2 children aged 10 and 8 years who would not be able to accompany him due to the short notice. The application was approved and he sailed to Western Australia on the Convict transport Runnymede leaving his wife and 2 sons in England. It does not appear that the family joined John in Western Australia before his early death in 1868 |
