Further Information | British Army Worldwide Index 1841 William Miller 1257 Private 74th Foot location Barbados, at sea Montreal Discharge due to ophthalmia and syphilis ssuffering both primary and secondary symptoms. William had problems adapting to life in the army and from the beginning was charged with a series offences ranging from absent without leave, drunkenness to improper language until in in 1837 he was awarded 100 lashes for being absent without leave and making away with army property. In 1842 at La Prairie (Canada) he was convicted at a District Court martial with desertion and losing accoutrements and sentenced to 4 months imprisonment- 3 with hard labour and 1 with solitary confinement and to be marked with the letter D. His conduct improved from this time and he was awarded Good Conduct pay of 1d per diem in 1847 and 1848. William Miller’s pension records show he was paid in Western Australia until 31st December 1864 when he relocated to South Australia where he was paid in 1865 and 1866, however there is no record of payment after that and he was taken off the roll in 1871 as he had made no appearance for payment. |
