During the voyage of the Clara Michael Kennedy was the Sergeant Major, William McIntosh although the superior rated member of the guard took the position of a private. 1851 Census HO 107/1741/121/15 Michael age 30, Corporal 48th Born Portglenone Antrim is living with his wife Margaret age 20 born Banbridge Down Ireland and their child John age 1 years born Dublin In a despatch to the Governor dated 28th June 1865 the Civil Service Commission raised the question of Michael Kennedy being employed as an Assistant warder despite having lost an eye during the Crimean conflict. On 17th August 1865 Governor Kennedy replied saying “…as Kennedy was selected in England to fill the responsible post of Sergeant Major in Charge of the Guard in the convict ship Clara, and, it is reasonable to suppose must have been considered by those under whom he served before receiving such an appointment as steady, trustworthy and intelligent.” A role he filled to the Surgeon Superintendent’s satisfaction. Michael Kennedy’s daughter Lily had an illegitimate baby in 1882 the father being a man called Campbell. The baby died of malnutrition while in the care of another woman; subsequently Michael Kennedy bought an action against Campbell for the seduction of his daughter in 1884. Many newspaper accounts of the case.19TH July 1883 and 29 April 1884 Michael Kennedy wrote to the Governor of Western Australia regarding the seduction of his daughter (Lillian) by the Station Master at Fremantle Mr Campbell who was a married man and his subsequent conduct regarding the birth of a child. Although the Governor had sympathy with the case he said he was unable to interfere. SROWA Cons 527 1884/2259 11th June 1886 Warder Michael Kennedy wrote to the Governor regarding what he saw as an anomaly in the payment of his salary and pension. On 6th May 1882 he was appointed warder at the Lunatic asylum at a salary of £108 per annum. (Previously he had worked for the Convict Department) however his pension was included as part of the salary package.
