America (Canada) Harriet age 3 born Preston Lancashire England Elizabeth age 11months born Ipswich Suffolk England23rd March 1863 on board the CLYDE a school for the pensioners children was established under the guidance of Catherine Cantwell subsequently on 26th December 1866 Catherine left WA for Adelaide on the Sea Ripple- no further records of her have been located. 12th May 1875. Enrolled pensioner Private Thomas Cantwell, 97th, 1/2 per day, has erected ‘a good and substantial’ cottage on a piece of land purchased by him in the vicinity of the Convict prison at Fremantle, comparison of the case of EP Martin Joyce. Requests £15. 7 February 1870. THOS CANTWELL reported his hut at Point Walter had been robbed between the hours of 10am 6th inst and 8am the 7th inst and the following property taken away; about 4lbs beef, 1lb suet, 2 loaves bread and 1 flour sack. (SROWA AN5 Cons 419 Item 4 1869-1871) 1870 Thomas Cantwell is on a list of Electors for the district of Fremantle (The Express 2nd September 1879) Fremantle Rate books 1880 show Thomas Cantwell was the owner occupier of 836 and 837 Hampton Road Fremantle 836 with cottage was valued at £30 and 837 unimproved had a value of £12 1883 application made for transfer of land by Honora Cantwell of Fremantle In 1891 the Widow Cantwell had two rooms, at the Fremantle Barracks but she said she proposed going to the Home. But that did not happen as on 14 August 1899 Widow Cantwell requested that she be permitted to have her grandson ‘Pring’ living with her as he is an orphan – this is the same WT Pring (grandson) who attended her funeral in 1906 just which one of her daughters’ child he was has not established Note: On 28th November 1891 prior to the Immigration Depot expanding the area it occupied in the Pensioner Barracks building in South Terrace Fremantle, Timothy McCarthy, (formerly 18th Foot) who was in charge of the Barracks, made an inventory of the twenty-one families living in the Pensioners quarters. He recorded the number of rooms they occupied and the names, ages and occupation of the children who lived with them. |
