1851 Richard Fairgrieve 1472 Private 71st regiment location Dublin
1861 As above location Stirling Castle
Discharge: At own request free to pension having served upwards of 21 years
1861 Census Richard Fairgrove, age 40 a soldier in the 71st regiment and his wife Marian age 35, a laundress born Paisley were living St. John’s Street Stirling with their son Joseph who was born 1861 no place of birth –(the age is incorrect should be age 6 born 1854)
Daughter Elizabeth age 15 is a domestic servant in the home of Mary Scott at Dollar Clackmannanshire, it states she was born Corfu Greece 1846, however the 71st regiment was stationed in Antigua from December 1844 to January 1847.
The Fairgrieve family was the cause of some disruption during the voyage of the Clara: Richard had his grog stopped for 2 days for fighting with Martin Conley and also with his wife; he was placed on bread and water for 24 hours for ‘making an impartial remark while on watch.’ The surgeon superintendent found his wife quarrelsome refusing to go below when the decks were being cleaned and their daughter went into the sailors’ barracks.
1871 Richard, Marion and son Joseph (Fargrave) are living at Oswald Street Calton, Bridgeton Glasgow. Richard is working as a painter.
