Further Information | British Army Worldwide index 1841 John Murphy, 757,22nd Foot, Location: At sea camp near Poona, India WO12/3903 1851 As Above, Location Dagshai, India Discharge due to Chronic Hepatitis – liver considerably enlarged. During the proceedings of a Court of Inquiry into complaints made by the wives of the Pensioner Guard on the Stag into the conduct of the Super Intendent Surgeon Caldwell when Mrs Mash, Mrs Murphy, and Mrs Weir wives of the Enrolled pensioners were under medical treatment for symptoms that he thought exceedingly strange for married women, Susan Murphy, wife of John Murphy, said she submitted to the examination through fear of punishment – by which she meant being put into the ‘Black Box’ or kept down below. Her husband Enrolled pensioner John Murphy said he and his wife lived as man and wife both before and after the examination and he was not diseased. John Murphy gave evidence at the trial of Captain Foss as he entrusted £17 to Captain FOSS for safe keeping. There are no records for Susan Murphy after the arrival of the Stag. John Murphy travelled to South Australia alone. |
