Discharge due to a cough and impaired general health
1851 Scottish Census shows James Crooks age 40, an unmarried man, living with his sister and brother-in-law Jane and Fowler Ferguson and their family at Binnies Close Leith.
On 15 November 1866 James applied to have his pension paid at Melbourne (from Adelaide) as he wished to reside there. This document said he was a single man born at Leith and his parents were deceased but not named.
WO23 1873 for Victoria states “off no appearance”- NAA said he was struck off 13 August 1874 see reel B 2712 roll 1 page 94. It was the usual practise that if a pension had not been claimed for some time the pensioner was struck off the roll.
