Further Information | 1841 British Army World Wide Index – Location: Chatham, Kent 1851 British Army World Wide Index – Location: Lahore, Pakistan 1861 British Army World Wide Index – Regiment stationed at: Belgaum, East Indies William LAUGHLIN also spent time in Tasmania during his service in New South Wales. He was a member of an escort involved in an attempted mutiny by convicts being transported to Norfolk Island (see Obituary) Discharge due to general debility after 12 years service in India-unfit for further service William Laughlin was one of six pensioners engaged to accompany Mr. C.C. Hunt on an expedition to open up the country east of York from 17 January to 26 August 1865. Pensioner Hyland unfortunately suffered a groin injury as a result of falling on a rock and dislocating his hip. He was unfit to continue and eventually returned to base. Hunt records in detail all the duties recorded by the Pensioners and of Pensioner Gale being too old for the journey and he also returned to base. The party suffered from lack of water, sore eyes, splinters in eyes, and one of the convicts having a ‘gathering under his foot’, bullocks being poisoned and excessive heat and bush fires. As well as making a trail the party were digging wells and bricking them up to provide permanent water holes for travellers. |
