Further Information | 1851 British Army World Wide Index – Location: Limerick, Ireland Reason for Discharge – Ophthalmia Has been confined in hospital for the last eighteen months with ophthalmia with the result of causing considerable constitutional debility and much impairing his general health and power of vision. Both eyes have been affected and there is opacity of both cornea but more on the right side the vessels are seen much infected. Vision dim in both eyes and his usefulness as a soldier thereby limited. He is recommended for discharge. Is not of intemperate habits. Followed the occupation of a servant. Between 1859 and 1862 Henry Cowan was given leave of absence to live in South America – his pension was not paid during this period.
