British Army Worldwide Index 1851 Richard Sutliffe 1951 Private 50th Foot location Aston under Lyne In the 1841 Census Richard is living with his parents William age 38 and Mary age 35, siblings William, George, Hannah, James, Susannah, Job and Sarah at the back of Horton Road, Bradford, Yorkshire, they were all born Yorkshire. In the 1851 Census Richard is a single man living with his regiment (50th) at the Barracks Burn Hays, Burslem, Wolstanton, Staffordshire England Discharge due to varicose veins Granted gratuity £3 for performing duties as Warder on Convict ship Sultana Richard Sutcliff appears to have married for a second time despite his first wife was still living in Western Australia. He was admitted to the (Royal) Adelaide hospital six times and on the first entry 22nd November 1872 he said he was a married man; however on the second time 3rd March 1873 he said he was single. In the entries for 1879 and 23rd May 1883 he said he was married but by the time of the entry 10th October 1883 he was a widower as he was for the 1884 and 1886 entries. On all the entries he said he was born Halifax or Bradford, aged between 47 and 64, Religion Church of England, employed as a shepherd and had arrived on the Sultana. From these entries it appears that his 2nd wife Rachel died between May-October 1883 although the death does not appear to have been registered. After Richard left the state Mary Sutcliffe became the post mistress and telephonist at Pinjarra for the next 25 years retiring in 1893 with a pension of £37.10.0, her salary before retirement was £100 per annum. Her son Henry followed in her footsteps and was post master at Rundle Street post office Adelaide SA. |
