Like many sons of soldiers William followed his father into the Army when he turned 15. 1841 Census William Alexander age 5 is living with his father William C Kerr a soldier age 30, his mother Mary age 20 and brother James age 3 at the Chatham Barracks. (Ages of adults rounded down.) By the time of the 1851 census William A Kerr age 16 is a drummer with the 26th regiment at Fort Regent, St. Helier Jersey |
