Further Information | SROWA Cons 36 Vol 493/211 April 22 1862 Letter to HE the Governor from Michael Corboy whereby he states he arrived in the Colony as part of the Convict Guard in Aug 1859 on the Sultana. He served for a short time in the enrolled force and despite frequent application to Colonel Bruce had been refused reemployment. He had a wife and 4 children to support and had been unable to get employment in the Police force or as a warder. He had served it the British Army for 21 years and 81 days and had a pension of 11d per diem and paid rent of fifteen shilling a month. He had requested a transfer to another Colony but was refused. Colonel Bruce replied the Pensioner Corboy was a mason by trade and was struck of the Enrolled Force for being drunk on Duty furthermore he had been abusive to his Staff Sergeant. “With respect to his leaving the Colony and assigning his pension to his wife it is simply impossible …” Colonel Bruce considered Corboy had only himself to blame for his intemperance and misconduct.
Vol 561/62. 31 October 1863 Albany Michael Corboy applied to the Staff Officer Sydney to have his pension paid in Melbourne from 30 June 1867 as he wished to live there. 2/3 of his pension was paid to his wife and family in Western Australia. 1873 reduced to half as some of the children were able to support themselves
25th July 1879 Michael applied to have his entire pension paid in Adelaide South Australia: his wife was then in Adelaide.
Daughter Ann Corboy was admitted to the hospital in 1883 and 1886, occupation servant and dressmaker, her place of birth was Aldershot. On all the entries the ship of arrival was the Sultana except for one entry for Eliza in 1879 which said Otway |
