Further Information | British Army Worldwide Index 1841 William Watts 111 Sergeant Depot recruiting at Bath Chatham Kent Discharge due to chronic rheumatism and dyspnoea On the 2nd January 1849 William Watt (sic) was informed that he had very little chance of being considered for the Convict guard although he was fit and healthy at 49 years of age they preferred younger men. Despite this he was a last minute addition to the guard of the Scindian joining the ship 30th January 1850. On 4th February 1850 William Watts applied for permission for his wife’s sister to accompany them on the voyage to Australia. 14th February 1850 Captain Tulloch gave permission but she would have to pay all her costs of getting to Tilbury and 6d per day would be deducted from his pension to defray the cost of rations for the voyage. 1st May 1850 William age 50 received medical treatment on board the Scindian After the arrival of the Scindian at Fremantle Captain Henderson wrote a report listing the rank name, trade or calling, rate of pension, date of enlistment for 5 months service, marital status, and number of children for each pensioner. Sometimes the trade of calling differed from that recorded at the time of attestation: Sergeant William Watts, warehouse man, 2/2, 30th January, married, 1 child In 1851 William Watt wrote to Captain Bruce requesting a transfer to Van Diemen’s Land quoting WO instructions permitting pensioners to do so. The Governor approved the transfer subject to Captain Bruce’s approval.Family details not known |
