Further Information | British Army Worldwide Index 1841 John Watkins 901 Private 94th Foot Depot 8th May 1841 location Invalid at Fort Pitt Chatham Kent. Discharged after receiving injury to left hand and two joints of little finger cut off by natives who attacked him at Cannamore on returning to Barracks on the night of 8th July 1840.22nd May 1850 son Charles aged 3 months was treated for pneumonia on board the Scindian-died 9th June 1850 he apparently suffered from breathing difficulties from the time of embarking. After the arrival of the Scindian at Fremantle Captain Henderson wrote a report listing the rank name, trade or calling, rate of pension, date of enlistment for 5 months service, marital status, and number of children for each pensioner. Sometimes the trade of calling differed from that recorded at the time of attestation: Private John Watkins, farm labourer, 6d, 16th January, married 2 children John Watkins, pensioner age 33 was treated for rheumatism during the voyage John Watkins was one of the Scindian pensioners allotted land at South Perth. All of the pensioners resigned their land as it was only accessible by the river and too isolated. Captain Bruce tried to establish a wood cutting enterprise but it was a dismal failure due mainly to the difficulty of reaching the market at Fremantle. 23rd September 1854 Captain Bruce requested John Watkins 94th be struck off the Enrolled Force for drunkenness 17th April 1890 John Watkins age 80 applied for entry into Mt. Eliza as he said he was ‘past work and destitute.’ The Superintendent William Dale asked permission to contact his son George who was a single man working at the Beaufort River (Kojonup) to contribute to his father maintenance. |
