Further Information | Note on WO97: Entitled to batta for Persian Expedition 1857 and prize money for Central India 1857-8 – WO97 page 1 and 2 British Army Worldwide index 1851 William C Down 1152 Private 14th Dragoons location Meerut India Discharge due to a compound fracture to the lower right leg from a fall with a ladder on fatigue duty at Meerut on 12 May 1851.“Served in the Army of the Punjaub on 1848-49 was present at the affair at Ramnugger and at the Battle of Chillianwallah and Goojerat. Present at the surrender of the Sikh Army the occupation of Atlock and Perham and the expulsion of the Affghans beyond the Kyber Pass. Received a medal for services on the Punjaub Campaign a Bar for the Battle of Chillianwallah and 1 for the Battle of Goojerat. Served in the Persian Expedition in 1857. Served with the Central India Field Force in 1857/58 under the command of Major General Sir Hugh Rose KCB was present at the capture of Dhar 31st October actions of Mundasore 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th November 1857 seige and capture of Chandairee 17th March Battle of Betwa 1st April. Action of Koonah 7th May siege and capture of Jhansi 5th April Battle of Gallowlie 22nd May advance and capture of Calpee and pursuit of the Rebels. 23rd May capture of Morar cantonment 16th June 1858. Received a medal for the Persian Expedition in 1858. Received a medal and clasp for services in Central India 1857-8”. |
