Further Information | The Costigans were one of those families that served with the one regiment – the 11th, not only the father John but also the 3 sons, all were musically inclined. The two older brothers took their discharge in New South Wales whereas George returned to the UK. There are a series of memos from the Colonial Surgeon concerning the Costigan family which culminated in two of the girls, Margaret age 11 and Elizabeth age 7, being admitted to the Roman Catholic orphanage from 4th March 1881 to 31st December 1883 when they returned to their mother. It was noted that Margaret was nearly blind. At the same time George applied for admission to the poor house where he was admitted on the 4th May 1881. It was decided to allow Ann Costigan the whole of her husband’s pension to support the family, however George did not stay in there for long as he was back with the family in 1884.
