Further Information | British army Worldwide Index 1841 John Skillen 271 Sergeant 5th Foot location Catalonia and Vido Discharge due to varicose veins left leg making him unfit for further service In 1849 John Skillen was convicted of a felony and had his pension suspended (Belfast) restored after release from prison After the arrival of the Scindian at Fremantle Captain Henderson wrote a report listing the rank name, trade or calling, rate of pension, date of enlistment for 5 months service, marital status, and number of children for each pensioner. Sometimes the trade of calling differed from that recorded at the time of attestation: Private john Skillen, farm labourer, 1/-, 21st January married 1 child Death by suicide hanging himself with a handkerchief from the limb of a tree near the old Fremantle Ferry and found by children. Cause believed to be his discharge from the Convict Establishment for drunkenness and ill treatment of his wife. |
