Sometimes the trade of calling differed from that recorded at the time of attestation: Private Henry Herbert, farm labourer, 1/-, 16th January, married, 3 children When Ann Herbert established her school at Freshwater Bay she was awarded a salary of £10 per annum by 31st March 1862 Mrs Herbert had a salary of £30 per annum 11th June 1851 Captain Bruce in his annual report to the Secretary at War wrote the following: “The school mistress is a respectable woman, who formerly held the same situation in a Regiment, and she gives such satisfaction that one of the most respectable and industrious Colonists of his class in the neighbourhood is glad to send his children to her. I am raising subscriptions, and hope ere long to be enabled to build a schoolroom, which may also answer as a place of worship; at present the school is held in the mistress’s cottage, where likewise as being the most commodious in the Village, Devine service is performed in Sundays, by a clergyman, to whom the Archdeacon was good enough to assign this duty during his last tour”. |
