Will or Probate | VPRS 7591 P2 unit 130 Item 35/694 made 21 May 1886 whereby after reserving £30 for a headstone she said ‘I give and devise and bequeath unto my two sons Robert McSherry and Edward McSherry all my real and personal estate in the Colony of Victoria or elsewhere to be held by them for their own use and benefit share and share alike as tenants in common and not as joint tenants’ She appointed Patrick Joseph Sheil as sole executor. The estate consisted of a four roomed dwelling in bad repair at North Melbourne valued at not more than £250. |
Further Information | British Army, Worldwide Index 1841 Edward McSherry 1593, enlisted at Belfast, location Chatham. Edward was present at the action at Punniar 29th December 1843, with the Army of the Sutlej in 1845 & 1846, present at the actions of Moodkee, Ferozeshah, and wounded at Sobraon Discharge: “Contraction of the right hand caused by a wound received in action at Ferozeshah on 21st December 1845.” Acting Corporal Edward McSherry was appointed Sergeant Major on board the Lincelles 12th November 1861 vice Sergeant Major Moody. In 7th December the Surgeon Superintendent reported “A woman named Mrs. Mc Sherry, one of the wives of the guard found holding a conversation through an opening in the Barracks with one of the Prisoners. I have been informed that this has occurred frequently before. To be kept in the Barracks until further orders and well looked after.” Request to transfer to Melbourne signed 30th June 1870 stated he was married with 2 children under 14 years. Parents Robert and Bridget.Bridget McSherry died 9 October 1928 and is buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery but her husband is not. A Robert McSherry died in Western Australia in 1913 but there are no further details. Likewise Ellen (Levers) McSherry died 30 September 1929 and is also buried in the Melbourne General cemetery and her husband is not. The only death for a Robert McSherry was in Western Australia on 1st March 1913 age 67, buried Karrakatta Cemetery. |
