Further Information | Discharge: Unfit for service due to contraction of left foot resulting from deep ulcer of calf of the leg –also from gunshot wound right shoulder received at Inkerman. In 1863 John McMahon, pensioner of Perth WA nominated his nephew John McMahon age 23, living at Cappamore, County Limerick as a government sponsored immigrant.The headstone in the Northam Cemetery reads: “Sacred to the memory of Johanna, the beloved wife of John McMahon who died 26 October 1883, aged 50 years. Also Elizabeth daughter of the above who died 18 April 1885 aged 14 years. Sleep mother dear, thy task is o’er, Those loving hands shall toil no more, No more those tender eyes shall weep, Sleep dearest mother, gently sleep. Also John, dearly beloved husband of the above, died 16 Jan 1923 (sic), aged 87 years. R.I.P.” Towards the end of his life John was made much of as a Crimean Veteran and as a result there are quite a few references to John McMahon, Crimea Veteran, in the Northam Courier especially during WW1.
