SROWA Cons 36 Volume 541 Folio 217
Thomas Symmonds, resident Magistrate Fremantle. 25 March 1865, to Colonial Secretary:
A pensioner named Howard, some 6 months back left with her consent, his wife in Fremantle and proceeded to Champion Bay – where I understand he is working steadily. He left his pension of 8d per day for his wife promising to remit her money occasionally. This, although he writes to her he has failed in doing.
I found her yesterday –lying sick in bed, dependant on the assistance of a neighbour nearly as poor as herself.
She is a very decent and respectable woman and I have the honor to request His Excellency to allow her the usual pauper aid until I am enabled to communicate with her husband and make some satisfactory arrangements –not only for the future but for the … of the Government advance .
Lt. Col Bruce replied 28 March 1865.
Mrs Howard received payment on the 11th last £3 the amount of her husband’s pension to 31st Inst. I will by the first opportunity send receipt to Howard for signature to enable me to pay her the next quarter pension. This woman is honest but thriftless.

In 1881 Michael Howard requested to be admitted to the Mt Eliza Depot as he was half blind and feeble Staff Officer Armstrong recommended he be admitted but that did not happen until 1889. (SROWA cons 31)
