Further Information | British Army, Worldwide Index 1841 location Parramatta, New South Wales 1851 Location Dinapore, India Discharge worn out and had been severely wounded, left leg, at Sobraon 10th February 1846. John Heveron (Sic)was admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital on 7th February 1870 aged 52, he was a married man protestant living in Adelaide a labourer born in Armagh and had been 8 years in the Colony he died at the hospital on 26th March 1870. (No ship of arrival) Sophia was also admitted to the hospital firstly on 30th July 1878 age 60, she was a Roman Catholic and was admitted from the Adelaide Gaol. The second time 8th March 1881 she was aged 66, a widow born Paris living at Norwood and working as a servant. She had been 26 years in the Colony and had arrived on the Northway. The 3rd time was on 16th October 1883 age 66 still living Norwood and once again been living in the Colony for 26 years but the ship of arrival was recorded as the Norway After John’s death Sophia applied to the War Office for prize money for John’s involvement in the campaign at Pegu. It appears Sophia had no way of supporting herself and from 1875 had a long history of being gaoled for a series of thefts mainly of clothing but on one occasion of a silver-plated teapot. She pawned the article for around 4 shillings and then sold on the pawn ticket. She was usually gaoled for between 2 and 6 months although in 1882 it was for 2 years – all with hard labour. She died a prisoner at the Adelaide Gaol, the Inquest found from heart disease. |
