Henry and Jane were accompanied by their youngest daughter Mary when they left Britain for Western Australia, however she stayed in WA when they went to the Eastern States having married in 1865. 1866 Henry Duncan, 73rd, Letter of complaint by North Fremantle grant holder concerning the construction of the tramway embankment leading to the new Bridge at Nth Fremantle has made his home nearly inhabitable and asks for compensation so that he can add a 2nd story or else effect additions to rectify the problem and bring the property back to its original condition. Col Bruce also noted that the embankment also affected Pensioner Garrett McCann’s, 98th, property. Although there were ongoing letters about the problem no account of the resolution has been found although the following shows it was paid. In 1867 Patrick Dolan bought P lot 27 North Fremantle from Sergeant Henry Duncan for eighty pounds. This allotment had been subject to damp after the building of the tramway and Duncan had petitioned the Governor about the damage in 1866. On 21st October 1867 Captain Finnerty wrote Lt. Colonel Bruce regarding the condition of the cottage on behalf of Patrick Dolan with a report by the doctor. He suggested that a new cottage on higher ground should be built. He said that Henry Duncan had passed on the compensation to Dolan with the purchase. James Manning (Clerk of Works) wrote a report about the condition of the cottage and although acknowledging the tramway cut off any breeze it was not responsible for the dampness. Sarah Duncan was admitted to the Royal Adelaide hospital on 18th September 1872 she was aged 28, C of E, a married woman living at Alberton she said she was born in Portsmouth England and had been 5 years in the Colony and arrived on the Spring Bok. 1876 Henry was also admitted to the hospital on 15th January 1876 under the name of Andrew Duncan he was aged 63, married, a Wesleyan living at Alberton, born Leith Edinburgh and had arrived on the Springbook (sic) occupation boot maker.
