Further Information | Discharge: Extensive varicose veins of his limbs and rheumatic palsy, great debility of constitution and emaciation of his body. The Surgeon of the Robert Small recorded the birth of James Arthur on August 20 1853 but recorded his mother as Mary. The Surgeon recorded ‘The infant was born in a healthy condition despite the age and slovenly habits of the mother and the worn out and debilitated state of the father considered it probable that a miserable skeleton would have appeared instead of a healthy baby, however the impure state of the atmosphere of the ships barracks, and the absence of proper nourishment (the mother having little or no breast milk) soon brought the happy child to the state it might have been expected to have when it made its first appearance.’ He further went onto say that he had requested the mother and baby be sent ashore but the officer in command of the pensioners had no place for them and although he offered to pay for cheap accommodation for them none was available. 1853 Bridget Arthurs signed testimonial for the surgeon of the Robert Small 1859 Census at York Western Australia, shows: Joseph ARTHURS M 52 years m C/E Lab free Robert Small 1852 married Ireland . Following the death of her husband on 25th April he requested on April 27th 1875 some beef or mutton to assist Mrs Arthur’s recovery. Christina B 1844 is on the Bi-Centennial dictionary but there is no information of her birth in Ireland or of her coming to Western Australia In 1891 John Arthurs entered into arbitration with his sister Catherine and her husband Frederick Cook into the ownership of the land at York. |
