| Further Information | British Army Worldwide Index 1841 John Turner Private 425 35th Regiment location Mauritius Discharge due to general debility and Chronic Catarrh, however the Surgeon’s remarks on his WO 97 are as follows “Suffered from intermitted fever while serving in the West Indies and met with a severe injury in Barbados in the year 1831 from the falling in of the walls and roof of a Barrack room where he was sleeping- dug out in a sense of insensibility- his chest was much bruised and he has had a certain degree of dyspnoea ever since. Has latterly suffered from constant pain of chest and cough and worn out, broken down old soldier – disability attributed to exposure in a tropical climate and not aggravated by vice or misconduct.” In the 1851 Census of England John Turner is living in the home of Joseph Perkins at Greets Green West Bromwich. He is a single man aged 44 and working as a bailiff and is also a Chelsea pensioner, he was born Ireland. His pension was paid in Birmingham, very close to West Bromwich, until 30th September 1851 when he transferred to Maryborough. John Turner of the 35th regiment was a subscriber to the Pensioners’ Benevolent Fund. |
