Discharge: Free with pension after 21 years’ service Between 1869 and 1886 Carthage McCarthy had periods of insanity where he would wander into the bush for days at a time. The Police would send out search parties then detain him under medical treatment before sending him to the asylum and then release him back into the community. At the time of his death Carthage was in the employ of a Mr Lovegrove. The day before his death he took a horse and cart to Point Walter and filled the troughs with water after which he was not seen alive; his body was retrieved from the river several days later. |
