Further InformationThe information used came from ADM-158-87-1 downloaded from The National Archives website entry on Robert Janes who was born Westbury Wiltshire and also ADM-157-87-1
When he applied for employment at the Convict establishment he made a declaration that he was born at Westbury, Wiltshire on 1th May 1828.
Robert Janes was diagnosed with phthisis 28th March 1873 and retired due to Ill health. He was awarded a gratuity on retirement from Convict establishment of £38/2/6 increased to £40/12/6.
He died on 2nd May 1873 leaving his wife and family in desperate circumstances.
After Robert’s death the Fremantle Resident Magistrate wrote to the Colonial Secretary on 27th February 1874 stating that he had authorised a payment of one shilling a day be paid to Ann Redmond, a wet nurse, for the support of an infant age 8 months, the child of widow Mrs Janes. He requested instructions as to whether it was to be continued. The Colonial Secretary suggested that they (possibly Mrs Janes and the other 2 children) be admitted to the Poor House.
The baptism entry for George Janes said his parents’ names were Robert and Elizabeth Janes; he was born shortly after his father’s death and seems to be the baby referred to in the Resident Magistrate’s letter. He is not mentioned in his sister Emma Atkinson’s obituary.
The death notice for Arthur Alexander Reed mentions his sisters Mrs Huxtable and Mrs O’Connor while that of Michael McCall mentions his step sister Mrs Barrow of Albany.
