It gives a picture of life for a rather wayward boy at Fremantle in the 1870s and the hardship endured in the North West.

10th October 1887 son Thomas Hughes charged with the murder of Police Constable O’Connell he was found guilty of unlawfully wounding and burglary and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Mrs Hughes, William, Rose and Edward were charged with feloniously harbouring and maintaining one Thomas Hughes knowing he had murdered Constable O’Connell. The charge was eventually dropped due to insufficient evidence. (Mrs Hughes was named in the first newspaper as Margaret but later changed to Kate)
Son William charged with carrying an unlicensed gun in 1887.
4th July 1888 Edward James Hughes was also arrested for having house breaking tools in his possession (aged 12) found guilty and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment (Reformatory). Rose Geraldine Livie also appeared in the newspapers in Kalgoorlie.In 1891 Mrs Catherine Hughes (widow) requested the Colonial Secretary to allow her the use of 2 rooms in the Fremantle Barracks for herself and her 3 sons Edward age 23, Patrick age 34 and William age 26 until she was able to find a place to rent. She said her property in the bush had been burnt out. Although she was offered the use of 2 rooms she declined as her sons were not in favour of living there.
The property was identified as 66 South Street land grant of 25 acres.
