Further Information | British Army, Worldwide Index 1841 Location Woolwich, London 1851 Location Woolwich, London. Discharge: Due to chronic rheumatism In the 1841 Census George is with his regiment at the barracks Tower of London Whitechapel, London. In the 1851 Census George is with his regiment at the Royal Artillery barracks Woolwich dockyard, it erroneously gives his place of birth as Kildare. Although George did not receive a land grant he applied on 14th December 1861 to buy 40 acres of land at the Canning for £40 On the 30 May 1912 the Solicitors Messrs Lawrence Jones & Co wrote to the Officer in Charge, Royal Garrison Artillery Records, Dover inquiring into the relatives and next of kin and services of George Hamilton late of the Royal Artillery regarding an inheritance where the records relating to George Hamilton’s service and the death of his first wife and children was sourced. A George Hamilton is also mentioned in Barker’s dictionary of “Warders and Gaolers”. This is most likely George, albeit described as arriving on “The Stag”. |
