Lawrence Carey/Cary was admitted to the (Royal) Adelaide Hospital three times. The 1st time was 9th January 1866 when he said he was aged 43, married a Roman Catholic residing at Le Fevres Peninsular his occupation was seaman and he had been born in London and had been 12 years in the Colony having arrived on the ship Mozambique.
The 2nd time on 28th February 1867 aged 45, married Catholic residing at Alberton and working as a labourer. Born London, England and had been 13 years in the country with no ship of arrival
The 3rd time 21st January 1873 Lawrence Cary(sic) said he was 53 Married, Catholic, residing Queenstown a labourer and once again he had arrived in the Mozambique, he died at the hospital 4th April 1873.
The ship Mozambique put into King George’s Sound on a rather long and adverse voyage from London to Melbourne carrying coal for the steamship company. After several months she departed Albany on 4th August 1854 for Melbourne. Suffering even more bad weather after leaving Albany the ship became unseaworthy and the Captain decided to beach the ship (before she sank) near Goolwa at the mouth of the Murray river on 21st August 1854. The ship was written off as a total wreck and later sold for salvage. The 22 crew and 24 passengers suffered from near starvation during the voyage and afterwards. They were eventually rescued and taken to Goolwa, however no record of the names of the passengers or crew seems to have survived despite many newspaper accounts of the wreck and the trials and tribulations of the captain to get help, See South Australian Register Monday 28th August 1854 page 2 Stranding of the Mozambique.
Son John also had several admittances to the hospital, each time he said he was born at sea (his birth was not noted by the Surgeon on the Pyrenees), on each occasion he was a labourer living at either Crystal Brook or Yakka
James also was admitted to the hospital he was a butcher and living at port Adelaide in 1880 and Glanville in 1881.
Hospital admission shows William was a labourer and resident at Gawler in 1873 and in 1875 he was a fitter’s apprentice.
