1841 James Ryan 1462 Private 16th Dragoons location Meerut
Served in the action at Maharajpore 29th December 1843 and wounded at Aliwal 28th January 1846.
Discharge due to loss of power in the right foot due to a gunshot wound in the heel at Aliwal, leg wasted.
On retirement from the Convict Establishment James Ryan was awarded a pension of £18/16/9 per annum from 23 February 1867 increased to £21/12/11 per annum. He applied for an increase on 22nd October 1867 and 15th November 1867 after returning to England but it was disallowed. He requested that his passage money be refunded and that was also refused. See Barker page 186
When he applied for admittance into the Chelsea Hospital it said his family was provided for.
26th January 1874 wife applied for allowance from his civil pension and on 20th March 1884 his widow for balance of his pension
There are some anomalies in the shipping records as son William John is listed as James, place of birth Ireland and occupation of James Ryan is ‘farmer’ on the Highflyer.
