WO12/5206 1851 Worldwide Army index 1851 James Durnin, 1713, Private, 38th, location Depot Chester Castle WO12/5215 Discharge due to varicose veins in the left leg partly caused by military service and partly by constitutional informality James Durnin’s pension was paid in Turkey in January 1854 and although his WO22 does not state it – he could have been recruited for the Ambulance Corps. The Ambulance Corps was raised in 1854 for non- combatant service at the Crimean war battlefields they were former Army servicemen who had been discharged to pension. Consisting of four officers and two hundred other ranks and equipped with wagons for transporting the wounded and the necessary medical supplies they embarked at Woolwich on the 10th June 1854 for duty at Crimea where they were to act as stretcher bearers on the battlefield, provide transport for the sick and wounded from battle field to hospital, serve as hospital orderlies and servants for the medical staff. Totally untrained and already found unfit for service in the Army the Corps was not a success and within twelve months was disbanded the pensioners returned to the UK and their duties taken over by the Land Transport Corps and the Medical Staff CorpsFremantle Police Files AN5 Cons 419, Item 3 Occurrence book 1 May 1869-24 June 1869 13 November 1868. JAS DURNIN, pensioner, summonsed Joseph Dean CP for assaulting his wife MARY ANN DURNIN on the 8th inst. Dismissed, DURNIN having committed the first assault. 8 December 1868. MARY ANN DURNIN, summonsed Eliza Daw, married woman for assaulting her on the 7th by throwing water over her. Fined 5/- or 48 hours imprisonment. Item 5 Occurrence Book 20 September 1871-22 August 1872 3 November 1871. J. DURNIN, pensioner, brought to station at 8pm J.
