Will or ProbateCons 3458 Item 1883/008 – Moran died intestate his eldest son Michael applied for Administration his wife Bridget renounced the right. Michael Moran left his cottage and all his estate to his wife Bridget with the proviso that after her death it was not to be sold without the permission of all his children Margaret, Michael, Ann and John
Further InformationDischarge due to impaired vision the result of ophthalmic affecting the left eye
Alex Kilroy the Surgeon Superintendent listed the Moran family as follows:
Bridget (wife) Margaret age 15 years, William age 8 years, Michael age 3 years and Ann age 1 year.
Only Ann age 2 received medical treatment aboard the Mermaid.
20th September 1853 – signed memorial from EPF at Fremantle protesting about high cost of food
June 1855 – shown in military return as living at North Fremantle with wife and 5 children Roman Catholic
29th January 1864 – subscribed to Greenough Fire Fund when at Fremantle
16th February 1869 The Government allowance of 1/- per day which had been paid to Pensioner Michael Moran for the previous 6 years was to stop as he had an allotment at North Fremantle and was in receipt of a pension of 9d per day and his son who was in the Police Force allowed him £1 per month.
21st March 1869 RM Fremantle said he was paralysed and unable to walk any distance and gave an order for a passage to Mt Eliza Depot.
25th April 1869 in a petition to His Excellency the Governor Michael Moran requests if nothing more can be done for him could he be admitted to the hospital and forfeit his pension. He was not eligible for the Military Hospital at Fremantle as he was not in the Enrolled Force and he objected to being admitted to the Colonial Hospital or Mt Eliza.
21st July 1871 Sergeant Philip Furlong report to the Resident Magistrate on a visit to the Moran house said his son was no longer in the Police Force, (he resigned 6th June 1870) his daughter was practically a cripple and his sons unemployed. Michael had been bed ridden for 14 years and he said “I have seldom witnessed such a scene of misery,”
8th January 1874 The Superintendent of Poor Houses W. Dale wrote to the Colonial Secretary advising him that Pensioner M. Moran who is in receipt of 6d a day outdoor relief that he has a son in a position to support him adding he resides in his own house in North Fremantle
The Colonial Secretary replied he had better personally satisfy himself before the stoppage of allowances adding ‘I have some doubts as the “Moran’s” case. He is I believe bedridden and very poor. If after inquiry and Mr Dale satisfied the allowances are not required they will be stopped.’
12th January 1874 allowances stopped from this date.
