Further Information | British Army Worldwode Index 1841 John Harris 875 Private 5th Foot location Catalonia and Vido (Ionian Islands) Discharge– Unfit for service due to mania & catarrh. The mania was first apparent at Gibraltar in 1833. 31st December 1850 John Harris was advised that his application to have his sister-in-law accompany him to Western Australia was refused as she was of an age when she could provide for herself. John Harris was one of the 5 pensioners who joined the Guard of the Convict ship Mermaid at Portsmouth due to the number of the guard being depleted by two men who were sent ashore because their children contracted measles and one man had died just prior to embarking.21st February 1852 Captain Bruce recommended that as Doctor Shipton had observed symptoms of insanity in John Harris he be kept in charge of the police under medical care as there was no lunatic asylum. 22nd April 1853 Mrs Harris petitioned the SO pensioners requesting the next house built at North Fremantle for pensioners be awarded to her husband. Bruce replied as her husband was disqualified from military duty it was debateable that he would get a cottage at all. He further remarked that it was not considered safe for John Harris to have access to arms.(Battye Library Reel 1800A): Admission to Roman Catholic Orphanage Margaret HARRIS age 9 – admitted 24th February 1868 – left 20th February 1874 to go to service Champion Bay Eliza HARRIS age 9 – admitted 24th February 1868 – left 20th February 1874 to go to service Geraldton Caroline HARRIS age 6 – admitted 24th February 1868 – left 24th September 1874 to go to service Champion Bay
Some family histories have Ann had a second marriage to a Thomas WETHERAL 28th October 1874 Fremantle. The marriage certificate for this marriage it said Ann Harris father was William Kilbride whereas on the 1st marriage it said he was William Dunn so it is probably not the same woman. |
