Discharge at own request after serving upward of 21 years
The 99th regiment served in Australia from 1842 to 1856 and a detachment arrived in Western Australia from Tasmania in 1849 before departing for the UK in 1856 where after 2 years garrison duty in Ireland they were stationed at Aldershot before departing for India where they took part in the 2nd Opium War, the 3rd Battle of Taku Forts and the Battle of Palikao.
In July 1866 George McGuiness (sic) applied for his cousin Elizabeth McCarther a single woman of 28 years of Arch Hall, Navan County Meath to be considered as a Government immigrant
Name of wife appears as Marion in records after her second marriage
