In the Obituary for Lawrence Fay (The Daily News (Perth, WA : 1882 – 1950), Thursday 6 January 1916, page 7) it says:
“In 1874 he married Elizabeth McCann, daughter of the late Mr Hugh McCann, of Fremantle. He will be remembered by many old Fremantle identities as the leading cornet player in the old volunteer band of Fremantle, conducted by bandmaster Dean”.
If he was a member of a regimental band it may account for why Hugh served the whole period of his enlistment ‘at home’ when both regiments saw overseas service at the time.
