Discharge due to Exhaustion of physical strength due to long service and climate
In 1857 ten of the William Hammond’s pensioner guards claimed good conduct pay for 27 days service, one of whom was Private Owen McGinn.

Owen McGinn’s admission to the Poor house was approved on 24th November 1876 on the understanding he would pay three quarters of his pension (1/- per diem) into the Colonial Treasury for his board and maintenance. However on the 10th November Owen drew the whole of his pension to 31st December. The Commandant Major Harvest requested that in the future all applications be referred to him in order to stop what he saw as a fraudulent act. The pensioners saw the payment from their pensions as unjust as ex-convicts received their board and lodging free
