Further Information | British Army Worldwide Index 1841 Samuel Booth 1073 Private 35th Foot location Mauritius 1851 Samuel Booth 1073 Private 73rd Foot location Enniskillen Ireland Discharge due to chronic rheumatism and general constitutional weakness, enlarged veins bith legs and a paralytic affection of the right side of face. During the voyage of the Pyrenees Ann Booth age 20 months was treated for diarrhoea on 10th January and appeared cured but died March 2nd from meningitis the surgeon noted she was a pale an unhealthy child and scarcely had a day of health while on board. Mrs Booth aged 22 also received medical treatment on the voyage. 8th August 1853 Captain Bruce objected to the luggage of Samuel booth being searched in the presence of a ticket of leave man before boarding the boat for Albany. In a report to the Governor dated 9th September 1854 Staff Officer Bruce wrote ‘On the 28th August I came in sight of Albany passing about a mile and a half from the town allotments marked out for Pensioners. The men marked in the margin (John Wild, Patrick White, M. Fitzgerald, and K. Gregory) have made considerable progress in clearing their land and they have together erected for themselves cottages. I therefore recommend each of them for the sum of £15 – a fifth man Private Booth, has likewise done much, considering the comparative short time he has been there. He has cleared a large patch of his land and put up the framework of his cottage. I consequently recommend the issue to him also of £15. The land allotted to these men is very inferior to the soil of Kojonup. I hope considering their proximity to the port of Albany, they will be enabled to obtain for themselves a livelihood. The other Pensioners in this district, 10 in number, have been deterred from taking land by the difficulties of clearing and putting up dwellings for themselves. Harriet booth was admitted to the (Royal) Adelaide hospital 4th February 1890 age 68, Church of England, a widow residing Rosewater had lived 37 years in the Colony and had arrived on the Pyrenees. Also admitted to the hospital were: William Henry admitted 7th October 1895 age 45 born Ireland, C of E, married residence New Era VS, arrive in the Pyrenees and had been 40 year in the Colony Samuel admitted 22nd December 1897 age 35 born South Australia C of E, labourer living Alberton Mary A admitted 20th January 1881 age 16 born South Australia, a single woman residing Rosewater occupation servant Walter admitted 1st September 1877 age 19 born South Australia, single, C of E, living Rosewater There was also a Harriett Axford admitted 21st April 1888 age 40 and 31 December 1898 (no age, no ship of arrival, no time in Colony) both entries are for single women with the later one born England, she died 12th January 1899. This may be the 4th Child on the shipping list of the Lady Island as we are missing one although there was an Axford family in SA at the time. SROWA Cons 36 Vol 308 Folio 118 |
