| Further Information | Discharge due to rheumatic pains in shoulder and back During the voyage of the Robert Small Peter McQuade objected to the Surgeon Superintendent altering the scale of rations supplied to the wives and children of the Guard. Things became so heated that the Surgeon Superintendent, supported by Sergeant Major Knox, reduced his rank from Sergeant to private and on the ship reaching Rio De Janeiro requested that the Senior Naval Officer remove him from the ship as he considered him “ a very dangerous character”- a request the Senior naval officer refused. Lt. Commander J. E. Parish of HM Steam Vessel Sharpshooter from Rio de Janeiro where the ship had to put in after nearly sinking and catching fire stated: “With regard to the pensioners Bateman and McQuade after due consideration I deemed it advisable that they should proceed to WA in the ship in order that a strict impartial Inquiry should take place etc. (AJCP reel Reel 459 Piece 75 Despatches August – September 1853. Page 309) At a subsequent inquiry held on board the Robert Small on 23 August 1853 Captain Bruce said “Sergeant McQuade appears to me to have been right in principle though wrong in manner and deportment for I consider the Surgeon Superintendent possessed no authority to modify the scales of rations”. Furthermore he said the Surgeon had no authority to reduce his rank. Peter McQuade was treated twice by the Surgeon Superintendent during the voyage of the Robert Small, firstly on 8th July (McBride) and secondly on 5th August, both time the surgeon gave malingering as the reason for treatment. On the 1859 York census Peter McQuade was living with his wife Elizabeth age 42 and children Ellen age 15, Mary age 9, William age 7 all born England and son Frederick age 4 born Western Australia. All could read & write and were Church of England. He had 4 acres of wheat and a further 5 ½ acres cleared and ready for cultivation and owned 6 head of cattle and 1 pig.
