Further Information | British Army Worldwide Index 1841 John McPhie 249 Private 75th foot location Fort Beaufort Cape of Good Hope Discharge due to rheumatism and dyspnoea On 6th July 1914 their only son Richard wrote to Chelsea Hospital asking for information re his deceased parents John and Catherine McPhee. He stated his mother Catherine Hay was born at Perth Scotland and married in 1847 also at Perth Scotland. Apparently she had worked as a matron and he asked if she had been employed at the Chelsea Hospital and whether his father had been a patient there. The hospital replied on 6th July 1914 that John McPhee had never been admitted to Chelsea Hospital and there was no trace Catherine Hay had worked there either as a matron or as a nurse between the years 1835 and 1852. Letters are attached to the WO 97 for John McPhie. He also wrote to the Brunswick and Coburg Leader looking for information about his family stating he had 2 sisters and with the further information his father had been smothered by a ‘inrush of slurry’ at Forrest Creek. An Inquest was held into the death of John McPhee on 16th August 1858, evidence was given by his mate Richard Harris and another miner Frederick Evans who helped to dig him out. Surgeon Nilham Smith pronounced his dead at the site. The jury found “ That John McPhee age 53 years was accidentally smothered in a sludge hole on the 14th August at Forrest Creek.” The report of the inquest can be found on the PROVIC website. |
